Frequently asked questions

How do you know my ZIP code?

Your network connection reveals an approximate location: Cloudflare's edge network maps your IP address to a nearby ZIP code the moment the page loads, and our IP-Lookup.net engine cross-checks it with network intelligence. Nothing is installed, and no account or tracking profile is created.

Why is the ZIP code wrong or a few miles off?

IP-based location points at your internet provider's equipment, not your street. It usually lands in the right city but can be a neighborhood — occasionally a town — away. If you're on a VPN, proxy, or corporate network, it shows the exit server's area instead; we flag that when we detect it. In the US, the location button can make a closer estimate by matching your device location to the nearest ZIP centroid, but it is still not an address-level result.

Is the map exact?

No. The map centers on the same estimate as the big number — your network's area or, in location mode, the nearest ZIP centroid — so treat it as neighborhood context, not a pin on your door. Map imagery comes from OpenStreetMap and is served through our own server, so your IP address is never sent to a third-party tile provider.

What's the difference between a ZIP code and ZIP+4?

A ZIP code is the five-digit delivery area (like 90210). ZIP+4 adds four digits that narrow it to a specific block face or building, mainly used for bulk mail sorting. This site returns the five-digit ZIP — that's what almost every form asks for.

Does this work outside the United States?

Yes. "ZIP code" is the US term; elsewhere we show your local postal code (postcode, PIN, PLZ, and so on) detected from your network. The lookup tools and device-location estimate cover supported US ZIP data only.

Do you store my IP address or my searches?

We do not create accounts, analytics profiles, or application logs of your lookups. IP-intelligence results may be held in a short-lived edge cache for up to 24 hours (one hour for risk-flagged results) to protect the upstream service. There are no ads or cookies; only your theme preference is kept locally in your browser. See the Privacy page for details.

Can I look up the ZIP code for another place or IP?

Yes — use the tools above: enter any five-digit ZIP to see its city, county, and time zone; pick a state and city to list its ZIP codes; or enter any public IPv4/IPv6 address to see where it maps. Street-address lookup isn't supported here — for an exact street address (or ZIP+4), use the official USPS lookup.

How it works

The instant answer comes from Cloudflare’s edge network, which maps your IP address to an approximate ZIP code before the page even renders. Our own IP-Lookup.net engine then adds network intelligence — your provider, network type, and whether you’re on a VPN or datacenter connection — so the answer comes with context instead of false precision. ZIP lookups run against a local copy of the GeoNames postal dataset; for US visitors, a device location you choose to share is matched here to the nearest supported ZIP centroid and is not sent to a third-party geocoder.
